A drake Harlequin Duck in one of the ports in Sawara this morning. There wasn't much in the port. just the above (with a female) and 3 Black Necked Grebe. It was very dark and the water very choppy.
A Gyrfalcon had apparently been seen in the area and we waited for a couple of hours in a likely looking spot for it to appear but it didn't. It was a in a bleak windswept place, there used to be 2 birds present 10 or so years ago (I never saw them). I'd love to see this species, let alone photograph it. Hopefully it'll stick around a while and I can manage to see it.
Actually when I arrived a falcon flashed past, I only saw it for a couple of seconds in the distance. Peregrines occur here all year though...................
At Onuma the usual common species were around.
4 species of woodpecker (but no Black alas) were here including this White Backed Woodpecker, a bird I rarely get to photograph.
The Ural Owl was still in its hole but the pose hadn't changed since yesterday (I think it's still alive).
Back in Kamiiso there were 11 Brent Geese, 1 Black Necked Grebe, 1 Goldeneye and 10 or so Scaup in the port.

ReplyDeleteThe Harlequin is amazing. Great shots of the woody and love the facial expression of the golden-eye, (I think). Looks like you're gonna have to do the time for the Gyrfalcon but it'll be worth it.
