Glaucous and Glaoucous Winged Gulls at Kamiiso this afternoon.
There were 7 species of gull present but these 2 are always the most interesting to me. They seemed like exotic northern invaders to me when I first arrived here.Actually both are pretty common in winter. They do evoke the cold north though. Hokkaido is far to the south of Lancashire but is also far colder.
This December has been pretty mild though, only a bit of snow around. Also at Kamiiso were 4 Great Egret, a small flock of 10 or so Brent Geese, Scaup, Goldeneye, Goosander and Wigeon. Near my apartment the only thing of note was a flock of 20 or so Crossbill high up in the trees in Goryokaku Park yesterday.

Two very interesting photographs. Gulls in Japan are most challenging for me. These are beautifully illustrated.
ReplyDeleteThe really challenging ones are the 'Herring Gull' types and others. Vega is very common but how many American Herring, Mongolian, Thayers and Heuglins Gulls do we overlook?

DeleteBoth Glaucous and Glaucous-winged Gulls appear here in HK, but very rarely - it's always good to see more shots of them.
ReplyDeleteAs for Heuglin's, Mongolian, Vega etc. we can get hundreds in winter, but it takes more dedication than I've got to work them out !
Hi John, I may take more of an interest in all those gull species when my Japanese list is beginning to near 300 (which may take a while as I rarely leave south Hokkaido, I'm on 273 I think now).
