Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

A friend very kindly lent me his new 100-400 MK2 this morning....................

Shame there wasn't anything exciting to give it a good work out. In a park in the east of town there were the usual common birds...............

It was pretty dark so I was using the lens wide open, something I was (am) usually reluctant to do with my MK1. The IS and AF also seem to be better, I probably wouldn't have bothered with this squirrel with the MK1.

Crossbill, Brambling, Grey Headed and Black Woodpecker were also around but not close enough to photograph. At Irifune there was the grand total of three Brent Geese, here's one of them...............

Also present here were Peregrine, Red Breasted Merganser, Harlequin Duck, Pelagic Cormorant and Black Necked Grebe.

And how stupidly optimistic is this Slaty Backed Gull? C'mom you're never going to swallow something that size.

So the new 100-400 looks pretty good. Being able to use it wide open without losing sharpness plus the improved IS, AF and optics make it an attractive lens...................still can't afford it though.

    1. Difficult to say, I only had it a couple of hours. The old model is 18 years old now. Of course the fact it has newer better IS and better optics is a given, the MFD is better too. It depends on how you quantify 'better' I suppose. Not that much that I'm rushing out to buy it...................my MK1 is a sharp copy I think and anyway I'm broke after some heavy gear purchasing the last couple of years!

    1. Dan, I'm going to trust you and belive that's actually what the fish is called and not some name you've just made up.

Local fishermen toss it away if it gets in the nets. It must taste awful if even the Japanese don't eat it!

  5. You have so much wildlife there and these are all great pics. I often go out and just find...nothing.

  6. I guess the obvious question is "Did that gull swallow the whole lot?"
