Hailstorms
Only common birds again today at Yakumo. The Hooded Crane appears to have left and the only kittiwakes were a small number of the black legged variety. There is (or was) supposed to be a Sandhill Crane a couple of hours drive to the north last week................would have been a nice find for the person who discovered it..
Winter is on its way, reflected in the birds. 8 species of gull, Great Egret, Whooper Swan, various common ducks, a few distant White Tailed Eagle, Black Necked and Great Crested Grebe, Brown Dipper and Japanese Wagtail.
There was a huge hailstorm in Yakumo, complete with thunder and lightning. The end of autumn is near.

I rather like Kittiwakes, and they're tough! Strangely we had a hail storm recently too.
ReplyDeleteYes for such a delicate looking gull they brave the open seas in winter whilst their brethren hang arounf garbage tips and food factories hoping for a free lunch.
DeleteLovely imag of a mart bird, and to add to the current topic we had a rather heavy hail shower her in the NW of the UK yesterday.....
ReplyDeleteHail is actually quite rare here, snow and rain are common enough though.
DeleteAn interesting mix of "winter" birds there Stuart. At least hail showers don't last long, not like some of our recent rain.
ReplyDeleteHi Phil, yes it was over after a few minutes and of course I got my new lens back in the car before the hail started..........
DeleteNice flight shot of a bird I've still yet to see!
ReplyDeleteHi Ayuwat, you should be able to see them very easily in NW Europe.........
DeleteNice BiF. I feel that autumn is just starting here but the forecast looks cold next week. I can't report of much excitement in Niigata.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling we'll get our first snow flurries next weekend...........
DeleteBoth the Kittiwakes are attractive birds, and, - as you point out - not often found posing on rubbish dumps !
ReplyDeleteActually, a lot of the coast in south Hokkaido is festooned by litter and rotting seafood offal but the kittiwakes seem to avoid the more disgusting parts...............
