More birds in the gloom
Some more birds from the forest pool near Tomakomai.............
Most of the time the pool was birdless. In late spring/early summer there is a constant coming and going involving most of the small passerine species of the forest. Autumn seems much slower.
The highlight was the Japanese Robin from the previous post but several other species made brief appearances.
The most interesting was this immature Siberian Rubythroat. a bird I'd never seen at this spot...........
I'd never seen a Goldcrest here either..............
A lone Japanese Bush Warbler showed itself.............
Eastern Great, Marsh and Varied Tits also appeared briefly.............
The campsite was a bit quiet birdwise. Grey^headed and Black Woodpeckers, a flyover Woodcock, some Japanese Grosbeak and a Long-tailed Rosefinch were all around but nothing posed for a photo.
In the nearby forest there were lots of deer..............
It was too dark in the forest for any photography. Flocks of Coal Tit and Eye-browed Thrush were around as were lots and lots of Buntings.
They were very tricky to photograph as they foraged in the leaf litter at the side of the dirt track road. Not only was it too dark they were all extremely skittish.
There were quite a few Grey Bunting. this is a female.
Passage Rustic Bunting were abundant............
Lots of Black-faced Buntings too. At least they had the decency to come out into the daylight now and then. These are all females or immatures I think............
Yakumo was very quiet on the way and way back. Common Gull, Great Egret, Great-crested Grebe, Osprey and a lone White-fronted Goose were the only noteworthy species.

Brilliant birds in the woods - Goldcrest is a favourite... Black-faced buntings very attractive, too
ReplyDeleteShame it was so dark..............
DeleteI can't help but think that in those plumages both the Siberian Rubythroat and the Black-faced Bunting would cause me some head scratching. I could manage the Goldcrest.
ReplyDeleteEverything is head scratching in autumn Phil...........
DeleteThat Goldcrest is fabulous
ReplyDeleteNice to see one on the ground...........
