There was a small flock of Dunlin at Yakumo this morning.............
A combination of poor weather on my days off, poor photos when I do go out and poor motivation on my part has meant a couple of quietish months on this blog...............
But winter is coming and hopefully all those 3 things above will improve...........
Dunlin pass through later than other waders and some overwinter..............in autumn they are in a variety of plumages.
It was dark and raining at first..............
And then the sun peeped through.............
Other stuff at Yakumo included Goshawk, Great Egret and Black Scoter................
Plenty of salmon in the river, the eagles should be arriving in 2 or 3 weeks.............
Poor weather does act as a deterent! Some nice shots of the Dunlin. We saw a few on my Wrangel Island trip but not showing as much colour as these, which is a bit surprising when I think about it as that is about 3 weeks ago now, and I would have thought that would have more!
ReplyDeleteHi, they are so variable I suppose it depends on individual birds. I've seen them in late May still in winter plumage and in early April in full summer colours............. plus some of these are this year's birds of course.

ReplyDeleteDunlin are among the last shorebirds to move through here. For some reason this year there has been a huge movement of White-rumped Sandpipers and more than normal numbers of Hudsonian Godwits.
