A real mouthful
A quiet week (with very mild weather) is coming to an end...................
This Great Crested Grebe at Kamiiso caught a big fish at least..................
I didn't think it would be able to swallow it, but it did.......................
15 or so Black Necked Grebes were still around.............
Also in Kamiiso were the usual gulls and wildfowl including several Goldeneye that I unsuccessfully tried to photograph (actually every shot I've ever taken of Goldeneye has been crap), Great Egret, White Tailed Eagle etc. Nothing much near my house the last week either: Pochard, Great Egret and Daurian Redstart being the most noteworthy. No Waxwings of either species yet this year................

Hi Stuart!:) Great catch!:) The fish looks too big for the G C G to swallow, but that last shot proves he could. Great captures of all the birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm glad it didn't choke.....................
DeleteIncredible series of the GCB with its huge fish. I can't imagine what it must feel like to swallow a live fish and have in your stomach! Or did it kill the fish first? Regardless, great shots.
ReplyDeleteHey in restaurants in the town where I live people can eat (almost) live (it's still wriggling) squid...............the grebe was just fitting in with local custom.
DeleteYou'd think the live fish would cause discomfort, but it doesn't seem to bother them.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they enjoy the tickling sensation..............
DeleteIt never ceases to amaze me the size of food birds can swallow whole. Cormorants, grebes and herons seem to be the leaders in the gulp it down department!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it had room in its stomach and all those fishbones: it's gotta hurt coming back out.
DeleteAmazing captures and blog here! I initially noticed your “Grebe vs Fish” shot. That looks like a huge (do you know what kind?) fish staring down its captor’s throat!
ReplyDeleteSo the bird was really able to win the struggle and gulp down that big fish okay?? Does the prey put up a good fight, if eaten, does the unlucky fish get swallowed wriggling/alive all the way as well?!

Yes it swallowed it all..................and it was probably still alive as it slipped down too. Actually Japanese people do the same eating live squid.............
